Despite the economic setbacks Europe experienced in recent years, DENSO increased its sales volume year by year and expanded its operations twice, once in 2015 and again in 2018.

Today, DENSO Manufacturing Czech Republic is home to one of DENSO Corp.’s largest production facilities outside Japan.

Since Yamaji became company president in 2016, DENSO’s production volume in the country has increased by 10 to 15 percent. In line with the concept of kaizen (continuous improvement), the company is working evermore closely with European customers.

Almost all of DENSO Manufacturing Czech’s suppliers are locally sourced and its European production base has enabled the company to ensure product competitiveness. Today, customers include Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile Czech, Suzuki, Volkswagen, Škoda, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, Porsche and Honda.

“We value the close relationships we have fostered with some of the largest automotive manufacturers in Europe,” Yamaji explained.

“Manufacturing close to our customers allows us to create high-quality products, reduce costs and overcome the challenges related to labor shortages. Driven to deliver high-value services and products to customers worldwide, Kayaku Safety Systems Europe a.s. (KSE), a subsidiary of Nippon Kayaku Co., Ltd. has become an industrial force to be reckoned with.

Celebrating 20 years in the Czech Republic in September, KSE remains committed to providing solutions based on advanced technologies.

“Our goal is to provide the global automotive market with high-quality pyrotechnic products for automotive safety components such as airbags and seatbelts,” said Radim Spisar, senior manager for KSE’s administration division.

Shinji Ichikawa, KSE president, is proud of the company’s growth. “When we established our business in 1999, we employed 78 people. Today we have over one thousand employees and each member of our team is driven to achieve our shared vision.”

In line with KSE’s growth, profits also increased as the company began to achieve success. “In 2004 we reached just over 300 million Czech koruna in sales,” said Spisar. “After 15 years of dedicated hard work, we have increased this figure tenfold and today, on average, every car worldwide is equipped with at least two KSE products.”

KSE has its own research and development center focused on product testing and innovation.

“Our research and development center is the only facility of its kind outside Japan and our 35 certified engineers continuously develop new products for KSE and our group,” said Spisar.

The company’s most notable products include the Glass-to-Metal Sealed squib (GTMS), Plastic Squib (PLSQ), Micro-Gas Generator and the Lead-Wire Micro-Gas Generator (LWMGG), a business that KSE acquired in 2006.

Looking ahead, KSE continues to prioritize safety and quality while remaining committed to corporate social responsibility initiatives.

In 2004, Japan’s AGC Group, made its first greenfield investment in Europe and established AGC Glass Hungary Kft.

Tatabanya, in northwestern Hungary, was chosen as the location for the state-of-the-art facility based on the region’s well-educated, local workforce, strong infrastructure and close proximity to AGC’s European customers. The company manufactures and supplies side and rear glass to leading automobile manufacturers across Europe and continues to strengthen its role as an industry leader.

“Since 2004, we have seen increased demand for our products and solutions and have successfully expanded our operations to include a value-added assembly line,” said László Tisza-Kiss, plant manager of AGC Glass Hungary.

“Today we have over 1,000 employees operating almost year-round to produce glass products for close to 4 million vehicles.”

The Hungarian facility is a cornerstone of AGC Group and has received awards for quality improvement, cost reduction, safety and technical innovation over the past few years.

Customers including Daimler AG, Ford Motor Co., General Motors Co., Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG and Volvo AB have awarded AGC Glass Hungary for their focus on quality and excellence and, to some customers, the company is even recognized as a strategic glass manufacturing partner.

“Our role as an original equipment manufacturer to Renault and Groupe PSA represents 70 percent of our sales in France. We are also active in the aftermarket and spare parts segments and encourage customers to use our high-quality products to enhance their vehicle’s performance and fuel consumption.”

NGK Spark Plugs France supplies the French market with spark plugs, glow plugs, coils, ignition beams, lambda probes and temperature sensors. The company also markets technical ceramic products under the NTK brand for the telecommunications and industrial production sectors.

“We are not limiting ourselves to the automotive sector and promote our full range of products in Europe through our NTK brand,” said Sanoi.

The company’s other main function and a vital part of the group’s European supply chain is their production facility located in Meung-sur-Loire.

“France is the only production base in Europe where we manufacture spark plugs for the region,” said Sanoi. “The spark plugs are exported to our German office and distributed across Europe.”
While sales of NGK’s glow plugs used in diesel engines were recently affected by Volkswagen’s “dieselgate” scandal, the company is focusing on sales of other high-quality products and strengthening its position in France.
