Panasonic Homes Co. Ltd. was established in Japan in 1963 by Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic Corp. With industry-leading home-building technology, the company has expanded its business in Asia and this year is planning to establish its business in New Zealand as a home building materials supplier.

As a group company of Prime Life Technologies Corp. (established by Panasonic Corp. and Toyota Motor Corp.), Panasonic Homes focuses on integrating lifestyle and technology to deliver future-oriented town developments.

Meanwhile, home ownership rates have fallen in New Zealand and demand for affordable housing has increased significantly over the past decade.

KiwiBuild was established in 2018 by the New Zealand government to address the housing challenges facing the country and has since been taken over by Kainga Ora, a crown agency for housing development in the country.

“We want to use our technology and know-how proven in Japan, a country with earthquake and typhoons, to support housing needs of New Zealand,” said Kazuhiko Tanaka, general manager of Panasonic Homes’ overseas business division. “We promised to Kainga Ora to help improve the quality of New Zealand homes and shorten the construction period.”

Panasonic Homes will export high-quality housing materials manufactured at its factory in Japan to New Zealand. Steel-framed panel-type housing components have proven to strengthen building structures and are highly resistant not only to earthquake damage, but water damage as well.

Panasonic Homes partnered with Mike Greer Commercial (MGC), one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned residential building companies, and completed a prototype home in Waikato, New Zealand.

“While most homes in New Zealand take seven months to build, our technology reduces construction time and enabled us to complete the prototype house in three months and it will also lead to skill transfer to construction personnel.” Tanaka said.

“Through the introduction of housing technology cultivated in earthquake-prone Japan, we look forward to delivering solutions to the country’s building sector and sharing our expertise to contribute to the further development of construction industry in New Zealand,” said Tanaka.

Toyo Business Engineering Corp. (B-ENG) is a pioneer in the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. B-EN-G has also expanded into the “internet of things,” supporting the growth of the manufacturing industry through software and technology.

B-EN-G was the first Japanese company to partner with SAP, a German multinational software company. Today, B-EN-G supports customers in over 20 countries and the company ensures each client’s manufacturing operations remain competitive by delivering solutions that enable them to effectively manage their business operations and customer relationships.

Yuichi Watanabe, Deputy Managing Director of B-EN-G Thailand  |  © Synergy Media Specialists
Toyo Business Engineering (Thailand) Co. (B-EN-G Thailand) was established in March 2003 to meet the needs of the business community across the country. Today, 80 percent of B-ENG Thailand’s clients are active in the Thai manufacturing sector and the company is building on its reputation for delivering quality service and support.

“B-EN-G Thailand provides simple solutions that enable our clients to optimize their processes and digitize the knowledge and experiences of leading manufacturing companies,” said Yuichi Watanabe, B-EN-G Thailand’s deputy managing director.

Developed in-house, mcframe (manufacturing and communication framework) is B-EN-G’s software product line, covering manufacturing operations from shop floor to upper management. With mcframe, ERP solutions include accounting, supply chain management, cost management, product line management and internet of things solutions as well.

“We have developed tailored solutions to meet the needs of our customers in Thailand,” said Watanabe. “In Thailand, 90 percent of our customers are Japanese and while the country continues to successfully attract investment from Japan and other Asian countries, we want to connect with local Thai companies and work together to create new business opportunities by leveraging on the strengths of one another.”

B-EN-G Thailand’s collaboration with the Department of Industrial Promotion will support the country’s Thailand 4.0 initiative to revive small and midsized manufacturing industries. In addition, the Thai–German Institute is implementing B-EN-G’s IoT Series when consulting with their customers.

“The country of Thailand provides not only a good ‘trial market’ for companies developing new businesses and technologies, but also a forward- moving economy, an industrial realization of new technologies and an abundant workforce,” said Watanabe. “By creating solutions together, we can contribute to the strengthening of the Thai economy and build future opportunities.”

Successfully establishing a business more often than not requires a strong local partner. A member of the prestigious Saudi CPC Group, Advanced Vision Morocco, has been serving clients across the country since 2014.

Advanced Vision Morocco offers clients high-quality electrical, mechanical, infrastructure and renewable energy solutions. Having completed numerous projects across the country, the company is actively contributing to the transformation of the Kingdom of Morocco and Africa as well.

“King Mohammed VI is an exceptional leader,” said Houssam Chafic, general manager of Advanced Vision Morocco. “Under his rule the country has been transformed and today Morocco has a dynamic economy. The people love the king, the business community appreciates him and we like him.”

As a quality-driven company able to meet international standards, Advanced Vision Morocco has attracted Japanese interest.

“We know Japanese companies appreciate quality services and solutions and we are able to meet their demands,” said Chafic. “We have built plants for Furukawa and JTEKT and are currently constructing Yazaki Corp.’s plant in Tangier. We are pleased to introduce ourselves as we are a corporate body established under the Indian Companies Act of 1956 as a public limited company that was incorporated into the Registrar of Companies in Andhra Pradesh as Weldflux Engineering Ltd. to undertake engineering activities and to manufacture welding consumables, equipment and machinery by S. Vijaya Bhaskar, P.L. Diwakar Rao and S. Surya Mohan.

These promoters were the first directors (honorary) of the company, its incorporation of No. 01-05284 of 1984-85, dated Jan. 31, 1985, and obtained a commencement of business certificate on May 18, 1985 with its main objectives set as the engineering and manufacturing of welding consumables and equipment. The company has sought technical collaboration with Europe and after studying various aspects of 13 companies from Europe, a technical collaboration agreement commenced in September 1985 with Trefileries Et Ateliers De Commercy of France.

Vijaya S. Bhaskar, Director of UBE Industries Limited |  © UBE Industries Ltd.
Welding Division was in operation for the manufacturing of welding consumables, welding equipment and machinery, etc.

Projects and Constructions Division, known as PCC (Projects, Construction and Contracts Division), was in operation for the installation of turn key projects, engineering, procurement and construction, and heavy fabrication.

Engineering Division (Tools Division) was in operation for the manufacturing of special purpose machine tools and tooling systems.

Automotive Division was initiated in 1996 in commemoration of the centenary of the automotive industry, marking Henry Ford’s completion of his first experimental car. That same year, in line production obtained an Industrial Entrepreneurs Memorandum license and converted the production facilities into assembling 10,000 units enhancing its shop floor from 67,000 square feet to 110,000 square feet for additional production and testing space. Due to political reasons, the license was withdrawn on the recommendation of the state government. This stalled operations and research, and development efforts toward automatic dynamic car parking stations were initiated. Upon successful research, a prototype was made and tests executed with satisfactory results; this led to the creation of the Infrastructure Development Division to further establish automatic dynamic car parking stations.

During the restructuring of operations, the Marketing and Trading Division was created.

A trusted global partner, Jurong Engineering Ltd (JEL) has delivered construction and engineering solutions to customers for almost fifty years.

The company was incorporated in 1971 as a joint venture between Ishikawajima Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd, (now known as IHI Corporation), Jurong Shipyard and The Development Bank of Singapore. In 2005, IHI Corporation became the majority shareholder.

JEL is involved in every aspect of every project executed by the company. It provides a full spectrum of services including engineering, construction, project management and maintenance solutions. By working closely with clients, the company continues to successfully deliver turnkey projects around the world.

“Our strengths as a construction company are founded on our engineering capabilities and superior problem-solving skills,” says Masao Akamatsu, Managing Director and CEO of JEL. “We are always seeking new ways to innovate and improve our capabilities to perform and deliver.”

The company’s diverse, competent and highly-motivated workforce of 23 nationalities from key disciplines consistently provide solutions that exceed customer expectations through 25 overseas companies and offices.

“We are the service provider to solve problems,” says Akamatsu. “We are ready to face challenges as a team and we communicate in a direct manner to coordinate effectively with our clients. Each project we take on is a collaborative effort and we are confident in our abilities to execute projects effectively from start to finish.”

JEL’s ambitious 2018 project in Myanmar is a good example of the company’s commitment to delivering projects in challenging environments. JEL participated in and successfully completed a 225-megawatt gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in a remote area of the country.

Equipment for the project had to be transported almost 800km to the site. The power plant, which has commenced full commercial operation last year, is one of the most efficient and largest of its kind in the country. This year, JEL is focused on delivering more turnkey projects across Southeast Asia.

“Our vision is to be the leading engineering and construction service provider in Asia,” says Akamatsu. “We aim to become the partner of choice in the region by earning the trust of our clients and strengthening our long-term working relationships.”

“Southeast Asia is a huge market and we want to capitalize on the region’s economic growth. Southeast Asia will remain our area of focus,” says Akamatsu.

“The volume of business we do in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam is increasing and we are penetrating countries such as Myanmar. In addition, we are diversifying to markets including the Philippines, Bangladesh, the Middle East and countries in Africa such as Mozambique.”

With an extensive global network, JEL works closely with its customers including Japanese companies in global markets.

“We are able to maximize our resources by strengthening the construction divisions of our subsidiaries,” says Akamatsu. “We intend to secure larger power plant projects in the region while focusing on renewable energy solutions, developing non-energy projects and strengthening our maintenance services.”

JEL continues to enhance its operational efficiency and project management capabilities while expanding its global footprint.

“We aspire to improve our existing business through technology and innovation,” says Akamatsu. “In addition to upholding the highest safety standards, we will strive to be lean, flexible and responsive to changes in the market.”

While renewing its corporate brand image this year, the company will retain its core values of diligence, continuous learning, shared ownership, customer satisfaction and respect.

“The keyword for us is ‘change’,” concludes Akamatsu. “In order to remain fresh and competitive in a rapidly changing industry, we are embracing changes and will integrate our resources to ensure the future growth of the company.”

In just five years, JESCO Hoa Binh Engineering JSC (JHE), a joint venture between Vietnamese and Japanese companies, has achieved dramatic and rapid growth with annual sales reaching $21.6 million in 2018, approximately eight times the sales made in 2013 ($2.6 million), a year prior to the JHE joint venture.

JHE was established in 2014 between Vietnam’s leading general contractor Hoa Binh Construction Co. and JESCO Asia JSC, a subsidiary of Japan’s JESCO Holdings Inc.

Toshiyuki Mitsumoto, general director of JHE, believes the dedication and unity of his team of over 200 employees has been central to the success of the company. “The key to success is to understand the human relationships with the Vietnamese people, building strong teamwork where all our employees can unite to achieve a common goal,” said Mitsumoto.

“Last year we participated in numerous corporate social responsibility initiatives, including donating blood to the Vietnam Red Cross and providing uniforms and stationery to schools educating children from low-income households,” said Mitsumoto. “These activities bring our company closer together and enable us to give back to the communities in which we work.’’

Over the course of the next five years, Mitsumoto plans to increase JHE’s business. Vietnam’s real estate and construction industries show no sign of slowing down and the company also sees opportunities in neighboring Southeast Asian markets.

“We focus on building trust and developing relationships with our customers and have collaborated with leading private developers in Vietnam such as Nam Long (Flora Mizuki Park), NovaLand (Sunrise City View), Gamuda Land (Celadon City) and Tien Phat (Ascent Lakeside) in addition to working on public sector projects. Last year we were awarded the prestigious High Quality Construction prize from the Ministry of Construction,” said Mitsumoto.

“We have achieved success by delivering the best quality service that is also safe and on time. Rather than aiming to become the number one mechanical, electrical and plumbing services company in Vietnam, we intend to become the best company we can be by working closely with our trusted clients and continuing to contribute to the development of Vietnam,” Mitsumoto concluded.

An Interview with Mr. Mohsen Salah, Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company

Is development in Egypt on the right track?

The development process aims to increase investment opportunities and we are working on many development projects. These projects serve the country, whether it is for an Egyptian or foreign company, and our main objective is to establish new development projects that serve investment interests in Egypt.

It is very important that foreign investors find the provision of power and infrastructure is adequate for their investments and Egypt is making sure this is the case.

How would you describe the relationship between Egypt and Japan?

Mohsen Salah, Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company  |  © Arab Contractors Company
I am a member in the Egypt-Japan Business Council (JEBC) and we regularly discuss investments from Japan as we work closely with Japanese companies and JICA.

Egypt and Japan share a strong bilateral relationship. We are working to increase investments in Egypt and we have established cooperation between the Arab Contractors Company and Hitachi of Japan at one of the desalination plants. We have a comprehensive knowledge of the Japanese market as well as Japanese products which are available in Egypt. We also had a previous partnership with a Japanese company during the construction of the El Salam Bridge over the Suez Canal. There is a history of Egyptian-Japanese cooperation in various sectors, past and present, and we will increase our collaboration sin the future.

What is your vision for the future?

We aim to be one of the leading countries regarding foreign investment and we are receiving many offers from foreign companies and investors.

There are great business opportunities in the ‘Suez Canal Development Axis’ and we hope Japan will be one of the countries to play an important role by investing in these projects in addition to the Chinese and Russian investors. We are seeing utilities and infrastructure demand create investment and business opportunities and we are discussing these issues within the Egypt-Japan Business Council.

What message would you like to share with our readers in Japan and around the world?

Egypt is a must-see country for visitors to the region. We invite our Japanese friends to visit the Egyptian coasts, beaches and historical sites. We look forward to sharing our country’s continued development.

Economically, we are establishing industrial areas at the Suez Canal Development Axis to aggregate and re-export products and services including cars, manufactured goods, food and industrial products. Egypt is in a unique strategic location and with the Suez Canal, we will continue to be a world-class center for trade and industry.
