Since its establishment in 2006, Kobelco Construction Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. (KCEI), has grown an extensive network of authorized dealers with more than 100 service points across India and the surrounding markets of Nepal and Bangladesh.

In 2011, KCEI set up its production facility in the Satyavedu Reserve Infracity Pvt. Ltd. (also known as Sri City), a special economic zone in Andhra Pradesh, just 75 kilometers north of Chennai. It was the very first Japanese company in Sri City and its success encouraged many other Japanese companies to locate there as well.

KCEI supplies construction machinery such as excavators and cranes that are known for their more efficient fuel consumption and durability. Owing to the synergy of engines and efficient hydraulic systems, Kobelco’s excavators could save about 10 to 15 percent of diesel per hour when compared to those of their competitors, making them more eco-friendly.

“In the beginning, our production capacity was four to six machines a day and in the first year we produced only 500 machines,” said KCEI adviser and former Managing Director Vikram Sharma.

KCEI produced more than 2,000 machines last year and its production continues to grow to meet the strong demand from India’s road and mining sectors.

“We recently completed our third expansion, raising our production capacity to 12 machines a day. We are still considering further increasing our production capacity, in accordance with the growth of the Indian market,” said Sharma.

The Indian market for excavators has been growing around 20 percent year on year for the last four years. This robust growth is expected to continue as India’s construction equipment market is projected to have a compound annual growth rate of 10 percent over the next five years.

Aligned with its vision of “delivering true value to society,” KCEI, together with the Indian Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association, have been driving initiatives to improve the safety and emission norms in India.

KCEI is also one of the Japanese companies collaborating with the Indian government to establish the Japan-India Institute for Manufacturing (JIM) in Sri City. The JIM program is a collaborative effort aimed at increasing the pool of skilled workers to support the growth of India’s manufacturing industry.

“India is one of the fastest-growing markets for Kobelco worldwide and we are committed to being a partner of choice in constructing India’s bright future,” said KCEI Managing Director and CEO Koji Nakagawa.

“We believe this is the right time to transit into the new industrial age to better control information, timeliness and improve production quality,” he said. “In line with the changes taking place within our industry, we will benefit from the abundance of skilled engineers and technicians that Singapore has to offer.”

Makino Asia also has plans to transform production facilities in India and China into smart factories. The company intends to continue to invest in research and development and to increase its existing team of 100 engineers.

“With the emergence of high-tech industries such as aerospace and electric vehicle production, we need to continuously innovate to stay one step ahead of our competitors,” said Neo.

“We are driven to improve our capabilities, create new processes and equipment and generate new business lines to stay ahead of the competition. We work very closely with our Japanese counterparts and look forward to strengthening Makino Asia’s reputation across the region.”

A pioneer in the production of compact construction machinery, hydraulic excavators, track loaders and industrial agitators, Takeuchi Manufacturing has set the global standard in the compact excavator market. By developing the world’s first compact excavator and compact rubber track loader, the company transformed the global construction equipment market.

In Europe, the company remains one of the largest players in the industry and has leveraged France as their base in the region due to the European country’s receptiveness to compact machinery.

“When we saw how French customers accepted Takeuchi’s concept of small excavators, we decided to establish our European office here in 2000,” recalled Hiroshi Komatsu, managing director of Takeuchi France SAS.

Takeuchi machinery is developed with an emphasis on comfort and mobility for the needs of a wide-range of customers, including general contractors, utility contractors and landscapers. The recently launched TB225 compact hydraulic excavator is a market- first, 2.5-tonne class machine with expandable tracks, allowing it to become the new performance-leader in towable mini-excavators.

“Our machines are developed with the purpose of providing comfort and convenience to our customers,” said Komatsu. “Our founder, Mr. Takeuchi is an engineer and recognizing that manual work was difficult, he specifically designed compact machines to assist individuals in their work. We also constantly make improvements inside our machines to ensure they are comfortable for personal use.”

A vast distribution network across Europe ensures the company remains a leader in the segment, but Takeuchi is committed to strengthening its position in France, the market that started it all for them.

Tamotsu Saito, President and Chief Executive Officer, IHI Corporation and Taizo Suga, President and Chief Executive Officer, IHI Asia Pacific Ptd. Ltd.

“We wanted to introduce our technologies to international clients and deliver solutions to the rest of the world,” says Saito.

“Singapore was emerging as a young and vibrant nation and we supported the country’s ambitious plans and shared our expertise. We partnered with the Singaporean government in 1963, the same year we opened our Singapore office, and established the Jurong Shipyard. This led to the establishment of Jurong Engineering Ltd. in 1971”.

Today, the company has three main businesses in Singapore. Niigata Power Systems Pte. Ltd. manufactures and sells diesel engines for marine, power-generation and rail-traction use while Jurong Engineering Limited constructs power, incineration and steel plants, petrochemical refineries and other infrastructure projects. Since 2012, IHI Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (IHIAP) has been the regional headquarters of IHI Corporation in Asia Pacific.

“We recognize the importance of Singapore’s location in terms of accessing market information and engaging with customers in Southeast Asia,” says Taizo Suga, President and Chief Executive Officer of IHIAP. “Through our Singapore headquarters, we intend to accelerate our business growth across the region.”

IHIAP’s research and development activities are taking precedence in Singapore. In order to drive innovations in chemical engineering, bio-medicine and other fields, the company signed a master research collaboration agreement with the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). “The V2I system connects laser ‘radar’ sensors to city buses to warn drivers of pedestrian flows at busy intersections,” explains Suga. “Our Singaporean partners, including the LTA, are keen to collaborate with us in developing new technologies and systems for Singapore”.

From IHIAP’s regional headquarters in Singapore, the company is delivering solutions and systems to Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam. “As engineers, it is our duty to deliver infrastructure solutions which benefit the countries in which we operate and improve people’s lives,” says Saito.

Suga concludes, “Today, Singapore is a spring-board for our business across the region and we will continue to collaborate with A*STAR and other Singaporean agencies on key projects while establishing partnerships across the region”.

PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) bottles and containers are used throughout today’s food and beverage and packaging industries. As environmentally friendly products, PET products consist of carbon, oxygen and hydrogen and the plastic resin is lightweight, strong, odourless and can be shaped into almost any modern design requirement.

Kota-Aoki

Kota Aoki, President & CEO, Nissei ASB Machine Co. Ltd.

Established five years after the PET bottle was patented, Nissei ASB Machine Co. Ltd. is a pioneer in injection stretched blow moulding (ISBM) machines used to form PET containers.

The pioneering technologies offered by the company are world renowned for delivering customized moulding solutions. Nissei ASB Machine’s range of products is ideally suited to the needs of custom moulding companies and small and medium size ‘in-line’ filling operators.

“Our company was established thirty five years ago, shortly after the PET bottle was patented,” says Kota Aoki, the son of the founder and current President and Chief Executive Officer of Nissei ASB Machine. “We started our business in the U.S. before developing our local customer base which gave us a unique approach and as a result, our reputation as an innovative company developed rapidly”.

Nissei-ASB-Machine-India

Today, the Japanese market accounts for approximately fifteen percent of the company’s business while overseas markets make up the majority of the company’s business activities. Nissei ASB Machines are exported around the world from the company’s facilities in Nagano, Japan and Mumbai, India.

“We invested in India in 1997 and have continuously expanded our manufacturing capabilities in the country”, says Aoki. “We are now interested in establishing another facility in Southeast Asia due to the growth and stability throughout the region and the affinity countries have towards Japan.”

Acting as a regional hub, the company’s Singapore subsidiary is responsible for sales in Thailand, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh and South Africa.

“As a company with an international focus, I would like to continuously increase our foreign employees here in Japan”, says Aoki. “I feel Singaporeans would be a great addition to our team and I am impressed with the country’s role as a financial hub and the high level of talent found in Singapore. Many Japanese companies are interested in ASEAN countries but we must continue to improve the way we communicate and adapt to local cultures. By utilizing our individual strengths, we can benefit from working together.”
